Kiewit Massman Traylor, a Joint Venture (KMT), received Notice to Proceed (NTP) for construction of the I-10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project from the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) this month.
Since early 2023, the team has worked under a series of preconstruction contracts with ALDOT to advance the Mobile, Alabama, project through concept development, design, estimating, and test pile installation. This work focused on developing a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) to minimize project risk and secure final funding.
The project aims to expand I-10 capacity to meet current and future traffic demands; provide a safe route for vehicles carrying hazardous materials while minimizing impacts to Mobile’s maritime industry; and improve roadway geometry, industrial access, and regional mobility. The original preconstruction scope covered the Mobile River Bridge, including west approach work, I-10 interchange improvements, and a new six-lane cable-stayed bridge. The scope was later expanded to include the Bayway section, comprising more than seven miles of the I-10 bridge across Mobile Bay to the Eastern Shore.
With the NTP executed, construction officially began October 1, 2026. This is a major milestone for the project team and adds another significant project to Traylor’s legacy, with the Mobile River Bridge becoming the company’s ninth cable-stayed bridge.
